In recent years, the Siena baseball program has become a top breeding ground for professional baseball prospects in the Northeast. Since 1996, 11 Saints have been drafted in Major League Baseball's first year players draft. In the spring of 2005, John Lannan became the latest Siena player to join the professional ranks after being drafted in the 11th round by the Washington Nationals. In 2004, two more Saints joined the professional ranks, as Ryan Bitter was selected in the 22nd Round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Blake Hanan signed on with the Baltimore Orioles Organization following the draft. In June of 2002, three Siena players were drafted--matching a program high. Dave Pahucki and Jim Buckley, both seniors, were chosen by the Boston Red Sox in the 23rd and 25th rounds respectively, while Justin Knoff, a junior, was picked in the 30th round by the Cincinnati Reds. In total 33 Siena players have gone on to sign professional baseball contracts with three (Billy Harrell, Gary Holle and Tim Christman) reaching the highest level.
